This course continues from our previous introduction to outdoor sketching and expands on the use of ink and wash as a fast, expressive medium for recording a scene. Ink and wash is particularly effective for outdoor work because it encourages economy, clarity, and decision-making. It allows the artist to capture atmosphere, structure, and movement without becoming overly consumed by detail.
Over the 4 sessions, participants will work at different locations to observe a range of subjects, lighting conditions, and spatial arrangements. The course will focus on developing a more confident and flexible approach to scene-building, with special attention to value relationships, wash control, and the integration of figures and environment. This makes the class highly relevant for artists who want to improve their visual storytelling and work more efficiently on location.
Topics covered include:
Color scheme selection and limited palette planning.
Notan studies and shadow mapping.
Blocking in major shapes.
Simplifying and reducing washes for clarity.
Perspective and spatial organization.
Texture handling in architectural and natural elements.
Introducing figures into the scene.
Quick gestural studies of urban and riverside environments.
Capturing the essential character of a location in a short time.
Learning intent:
Participants will learn how to work more decisively and expressively in outdoor conditions. The class aims to develop speed, confidence, and visual economy while preserving the atmosphere and rhythm of the observed scene.
